Are you an incurable traveler who relishes new sights, sounds, and tastes? Match your daring persona with a bold color frame from BonLook’s Travel Collection, like the Samba in electric, and allow your sunnies to accompany you on your exciting new adventures. What destination do you dream of? http://bit.ly/14HsqDz
In her day, Marilyn Monroe shook up the fashion world by oscillating between a girl-next-door, natural aesthetic and smoldering evening looks. Today, she remains a strong style icon. Be a taste-maker in your own right by donning an updated version of her cat eye frames (pictured above) with La Marquise:http://bit.ly/13dIFmc
Summer is a great time for outdoor adventuring, but all that fun in the sun may leave you wanting to relax with a good book. Whether you’re reading on a Caribbean beach, on a train across Europe, or on a porch in Southeast Asia, this list is for you!
We at BonLook love promoting talented women, so all the works mentioned here are written by female authors of today and of times past. I’ve also included an excerpt from each book.
Don’t forget to don your stylish BonLook specs for the ultimate reading experience!
1.The Lottery and Other Stories, Shirley Jackson
This 1949 short-story collection features the famed dystopian short story, “The Lottery.” Jackson is a master of the slow-build. Initially, the characters and context of each story are quite accessible. Think neighbourhood gossip, rural living, and office-life. But as each story unfolds, the reader becomes aware that things are not as they seem.
“Everything that makes the world like it is now will be gone. We’ll have new rules and new ways of living. Maybe there’ll be a law not to live in houses, so then no one can hide from anyone else, you see.”
2.The Djinn in the Nightingale’s Eye, A.S. Byatt
Indulge yourself with this enchanting collection of fairy tales geared towards adults. Byatt has a remarkable gift for prose, drawing the reader into worlds that are both beautiful and terrifying.
“Such wonder, such amazement, are the opposite, the exact opposite, of boredom, and many people only know them after fear and loss. Once known, I believe, they cannot be completely forgotten; they cast flashes and floods of paradisal light in odd places and at odd times.”
3.Lullabies for Little Criminals, Heather O’Neill
Written in 2006, this, O’Neill’s first novel, won the 2007 edition of Canada Reads. The innocence, confusion, and good-natured spirit of the 12 year-old protagonist is sure to win your heart.
“Sometimes when you are standing still and it’s snowing, you think that you hear music. You can’t tell where it’s coming from either. I wondered if we all really did have a soundtrack, but we just get so used to it that we can’t hear it anymore, the same way that we block out the sound of our own heartbeat.”
4.The Beauty Myth, Naomi Wolf
This incredible piece of non-fiction seeks to act as a bridge between second and third wave feminism. It describes how women who have largely overcome traditional domestic roles are still vulnerable to oppression via socially-imposed beauty standards.
“She wins who calls herself beautiful and challenges the world to change to truly see her.”
5.Just Kids, Patti Smith
This book by singer-songwriter, poet, and visual artist Patti Smith is a memoir that describes her relationship with artist Robert Mapplethorpe. The backdrop is New York in the 1960’s. Smith and Mapplethorpe are immersed in a bohemian lifestyle, rubbing shoulders with the likes of Janis Joplin, Jimi Hendrix, Grace Slick, and Allen Ginsberg. At the core, this is a love story, but it is unlike any other.
“Where does it all lead? What will become of us? These were our young questions, and young answers were revealed. It leads to each other. We become ourselves.”
“I was immediately pulled in by their unique aesthetic. Their designs are youthful, innovative, and fashion forward, yet they draw upon vintage influences perfectly. This harmony of the new and the familiar makes for a truly versatile and accessible product –there’s a pair of BonLook glasses for every woman!”
Here at BonLook, we love well-read ladies of all-kinds, from blog aficionados to English majors studying the literary canon. Reflect your penchant for the written word with a look that’s academic chic. Think a pair of our black square frame glasses, an oversized blazer, and a well-worn book-bag. In that same scholastic spirit, we’ve decided it would be fun to have our new blogger, Christine, fill out a partial Proust questionnaire:
Your favorite virtue: Kindness, pure and simple.
Your chief characteristic: Curiosity

This month we have been absolutely besotted with the up-and-coming Russian fashion mogul Miroslava Duma. Mira, as she is affectionately known by friends, has been at the forefront of the burgeoning fashion revolution that has swept across Russia. Her style is the perfect marriage between old Hollywood glamour and modern, tailored lines.
Whether or not you’re Mediterranean-bound this season, I think that infusing a little French Riviera style into any summer look will have you feeling positively coastal in no time (no fancy holiday required). As always, ever item I’m sharing here is under $100 (just like our amazing prescription glasses!) so that you snag one or two without your bank account taking a major hit.
I was inspired to put this together because BonLook just launched theirCôte d’Azur Collection, which features seriously cerulean versions of a few classic frames. If you haven’t already, make sure to check it out! It’s a sure fire way to cure those blues ;)
Here are a few of my favorite Côte d’Azur-inspired accessories:
In case you didn’t already know, we offer a totally free online style service that we have dubbed the Virtual Stylist Consultation. This is where you can get a video with personalized eyewear recommendations from a BonLook stylist by simply filling out a short style questionnaire. Here, Tastemaker Magazine’s Kristen Richards reviews the service. Check it out!
BFF Bloggers: Kaylah (a.k.a. The Dainty Squid) and Elycia (a.k.a. Love Elycia)
Today I have a really fun feature in which I talk with the absolutely adorable and ultra-creative BFF bloggers Kaylah (from The Dainty Squid) and Elycia (from Love Elycia) about friendship and blogging (naturally!). These lovely ladies were kind enough to take the time to answer a few of my questions.
Isn’t this amazingly cute? I’ve been spending a lot of time reading in the sunshine (thanks to my awesome BonLook sunnies) and I’ve been using anything but a bookmark to hold my place in my books as of late. I’m actually a huge sucker for a cute bookmark, so I decided to seek one out for you guys. So here you have it! Credit to Lonnies for the cuteness.
Welcome to the latest edition of the feature where you get the inside scoop on what the awesome co-founders of BonLook have been loving this month! This is one of my favorite features because, through sharing these things with you, I’m also frequently introduced to some absolutely amazing stuff. I’d love to hear about the things you’ve all be wild about through the month, so leave a comment here (or e-mail me at email@example.com) and let me know! If I hear from enough of you, maybe we can even start a reader’s faves feature too.
What could be more perfect than a new collection of super-fashionable sunglasses, especially when they’re such a steal! These beauties are available with prescription for our usual delightfully low price of $99 (and free shipping, of course), or without prescription for only $49! What’s more? For this week only, we are offering free shipping on our new non-Rx sunnies as a special introductory offer!
So, today I’ll be understanding. If you just want to skip the rest of this post and go shop BonLook’s brand new Traveler’s Collection, that’s okay. If not, keep reading and I will share some of our new styles and a little of the inspiration behind the designs!
I think it’s already quite apparently how crazy I am about Oana’s artwork (she was the first in our “Women We Love” series), so I am really loving this adorable desktop calendar! It’s light, clean-looking and totally free! Enjoy everyone, and thanks Oana!
Check out Sarah Wilson’s Conscious Club talk about how she quit eating sugar. It’s articulate, introspective and interesting! I know it did me some good to take a quick pause in my day, step back from things, and just listen. Also, while you’re at it, give her blog a browse. Enjoy!
Women We Love: YouTube Sensation Priscilla (a.k.a. thereadables)
This one is for all the bookish BonLook Beauties out there! When I saw Priscilla from the YouTube channel thereadables wearing our very own La Marquise frames in tortoise, I just knew I had to get her on this blog.
Today I am going to share an eyewear-themed DIY project that will save you some serious money. Buying commercial cleaners for your lenses can set you back a cool $10 or more a pop. A few bottles down the line, you’ll be wishing you could have saved that hard-earned cash of yours and picked up that second pair BonLook glasses—you know, that pair you had your eyes on last time you visited the site—instead of this darn bottled transience! Well, it’s time to rejoice, fellow eyewear-lovers. After a little experimentation, I think I was able to concoct the perfect imitation glasses cleaning spray! You can try it for yourself. The recipe below costs mere pennies and is (in my opinion) just as effective as any commercial cleaner I’ve tried.
When Veronica (our graphic designer) discovered Sunny Gu’s absolutely stunning illustrations on Pinterest, she spread the word and showed them to me. I instantly fell in love with her artwork and then had to share it with Melanie (co-founder of BonLook). Melanie was equally enamored by Sunny’s unique style and monumental talent and shared her website with Sophie (our other co-founder and Chief Designer). I think this is just what happens when you encounter her work. Her obvious talent is so striking and her illustrations are so beautiful that you just feel the need to share it with anyone that you think may appreciate it.
Sunny Gu has recently been featured in Dolce & Gabbana’s Swide Magazine and has done commissioned illustrations for some of the major names in the fashion industry. It is for this reason that we are thrilled that Sunny Gu agreed to be featured on our blog as one of the “Women We Love”! Although I would be happy to spill volumes of praise and share my thoughts on her supremely skillful art, Sunny’s take on things is quite a bit more interesting than mine! As such, here is my interview with her:
Freebie: Printable gift wrap designed by Maiko Nagao
These black and white gift wrap designs are utterly adorable and totally free! Maiko Nagao is a really talented graphic designer. I have quite a few birthdays coming up next month, and I love going all out with wrapping. I will definitely be printing some of these and adding a vibrant (neon perhaps) ribbon for a shocking pop of color! Enjoy! Hope you guys love this as much as I do.
It’s like when you find that absolutely perfect little black dress. Or discovering a pair of comfortable heels that go with virtually any outfit. Once you find those sunglasses—you know, those ones that go with every outfit for every occasion—the rest of your look just kind of seem to fall into place.
Over the course of my time here at BonLook, I have become quite partial to changing up my glasses and sunglasses on a daily basis (actually, I frequently change sunglasses multiple times a day). Despite all this eyewear variety that comes with the territory of being a blogger here, I have a few fail-safes that I always gravitate toward when I need a style that goes with everything. Urban Dandy is one of those styles. It was actually my first-ever sunglasses style here, and I still wear them so very frequently.
Putting together a look that embodies Carey Mulligan’s timeless style wasn’t too much of a challenge. The challenge was in keeping each piece as affordable as possible. I think that this look, which combines certain elements of her iconic red carpet simplicity and her day-to-day classic fare, is a pretty big triumph. Not only is each piece individual under $100 (as per the “Get That Look For Less” mantra), but also everything collectively only comes to a staggeringly reasonable $234!
I am excited to introduce a brand new feature where we’ll be interviewing an intelligent, inspirational and all-around impressive lady in order to share some of her talent and creative insight with all of you. Right now, we are hoping to be able to share someone amazing with you on a weekly basis. We also, however, really want to know who inspires you. If you know an incredible woman that you think we’d love and that others would love to hear about, please drop us a line firstname.lastname@example.org and let us know a bit about her. We are always so thrilled to hear your thoughts and to be introduced to even more impressive women!
Early on in my history with BonLook, Melanie (one of our co-founders) introduced me to the artwork of Oana Befort. I was immediately impressed by her unique artistic style and her very blatant talent and creativity. I was so impressed by her work that when we decided to start the Women We Love feature, hers was the first name that popped into my mind. I figured that there would be no harm in asking if this ultra-talented artist would be willing to be featured on our humble blog. To my blissful surprise, Oana not only agreed to be interviewed but also sent me loads of beautiful artwork to share with you all as well.
With Father’s Day just around the corner, we thought it’d be fun to throw together a quick gift guide that should both appeal to the sundry sensibilities of all the Dads out there and cater to a wide range of budgets.
The guide is rather minimalistic, but I think there’s truly something here for lots of different types of Dads. The concept: 4 classic kinds of Father’s Day gifts (a beer gift, cufflinks, a handy gadget, and a watch) pitched at two different price points (Budget and Big Bucks).
The whole concept of sweet indulgences that don’t break the bank is the subject of this blog post. After a long, hard week of trying on sunglasses, blogging, and Intagramming/Tweeting/Facebooking (ahem, yeah, I know my job is awesome) I love to pamper myself with an afternoon of relaxation. If you can afford to have a weekly spa day, then kudos to you lucky lady! This post is for the rest of us who love to have a lavish afternoon but don’t want to shell out too much. I’ll be sharing my favourite at-home pamper session where everything comes to less than $100 (hey, just like your future new prescription sunnies!)
I can’t get over how cute this is! Check out Stella and Crew’s kid’s fashion post featuring Sailor in Turtle from our Kid’s Collection? Got a little love in your life that you’d like to get a pair of these for? Rejoice in the fact that these sunnies were designed with kids in mind and only cost $39! Check them out here!
Well, I was going to watch last night’s Mad Men in my pj’s tonight, but this super-simple DIY looks so fantastic that I think I’ll have to put that pressing plan on hold and do this instead! Thanks for sharing, Lulus.com :)
Put some sparkle in your life with these pretty DIY glitter wine glasses! All you need is: Wine Glasses, Glitter, Mod Podge, Brush, and a Piece of Paper.
Welcome to another edition of Mel & Sophie’s Favourite Things. This time, I’ve got the inside scoop on the things they are currently loving. As usual, there is a wide array of different stuff on their lists. What can I say? These ladies like to keep life interesting! Anyways, without further ado, here are their lists:
The wonderfully talented and superbly stylish Amy Corneulius of Glam & Grace featured our La Marquise Crystal Sand in one of her outfit posts recently. Here’s what she had to say about our glasses and the Star Ambassador Program in general:
I guess you could say that I kinda love these glasses, I also have them in Tortoise! Being a designer, I feel like I always need to be updating my style…so thankful BonLook provides affordable and rad styles! I love being an ambassador!
We wanted to share this with you not only because Amy looks AMAZING in her glasses, but also because we think her blog is great and wanted to spread the word!
If you are a blogger and you’re interested in becoming a member of the BonLook Family, read up on how you can become a Star Ambassador too!
As you may have already heard, our Fashion Crush for the month of June is the adorable Carey Mulligan! Here at BonLook, we’ve been admirers of both Carey’s immense talent and her understated style for quite some time. So as you probably expect, we have been utterly delighted by the recent upsurge of Carey in magazines, on TV and all over fashion blogs. That’s why we’ve chosen to dedicate the whole month of June to her fabulous style!
BonLook is thrilled to announce that we’ll be teaming up with creative blogger and talented artist Molly Swanson of Specs and Wings to introduce “Brave Specs”. The purpose of “Brave Specs” is to serve as an outlet where bloggers can share their stories about what makes them brave. Our goal is to empower one another through sharing these experiences. Throughout the month, Molly will be featuring interviews with other creative bloggers so be sure to keep your eyes open for those! To get you started, here is the first installment of the month!
BonLook Featured on The Talk & Our Summer Travel Essentials
Hey BonLook Beauties!
The good news just keeps rolling in here at BonLook! Yesterday, we were featured on CBS’s The Talk! Our sunglasses were featured as one of this summer’s ‘Travel Must Haves’ (and, of course, I couldn’t agree more). If you didn’t catch the episode yesterday, be sure to check it out.
Inspired by The Talk, the BonLook Stylists have put together a short list of things that they can’t live without when they indulge themselves with a warm summertime getaway. This short list focuses on the stuff our stylists carry with them at all times when they’re traveling somewhere warm.
It is with utter exuberance and boundless excitement that I announce this news: BonLook has won the Emerging Entrepreneurs Contest at C2-MTL 2013! I am so very proud of Sophie, Mel and the entire BonLook family and thrilled to see what is in store for the coming year.
